Lake Manyara – A Hidden Gem in Tanzania
If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination in Tanzania, Lake Manyara should be at the top of your list. This beautiful national park may not be as famous as the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, but it’s equally worth a visit, especially for those who love birdwatching and wildlife photography.
A Unique Ecosystem
Lake Manyara National Park is centered around its namesake, a shallow alkaline lake that covers about two-thirds of the park’s surface area. The park is incredibly diverse, with habitats ranging from lush forests to grassy plains and hot springs. This varied landscape supports a wide range of animals, including elephants, giraffes, buffalo, and the famous tree-climbing lions.
Birdwatching Paradise
Lake Manyara is a haven for birdwatchers. More than 400 bird species have been recorded here, including large flocks of flamingos that gather on the lake’s shores. Other notable birds include pelicans, cormorants, storks, and kingfishers.
Wildlife Highlights
One of the most unique features of Lake Manyara National Park is its population of tree-climbing lions. While lions are usually found on the ground, the lions in this park have developed the unusual habit of climbing and lounging in acacia trees. No one knows exactly why, but it’s a sight that makes Manyara truly special.
Elephants are also abundant in the park, and you can often see them strolling through the forests or grazing near the lake. The park’s baboon troops are some of the largest in Africa, and you’re likely to see them playing and foraging near the park entrance.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Lake Manyara is during the dry season from July to October, when animals are easier to spot around the lake. However, if you’re primarily interested in birdwatching, the wet season from November to June is ideal, as this is when migratory birds flock to the area.
